| The HMCS Yukon is the newest and by far the most popular of the wrecks that have been scuttled off the coast of Southern California. On the night of July 14, 2000 the Yukon began to flood a day ahead of schedule due to the hundred holes that were cut for diver access. The Yukon now lies on her side in a hundred feet of water just north of the Ruby E, a 165 foot Coast Guard cutter that was sunk in 1987. The Ruby E rests on a 90 foot bottom. The tops of both wrecks reach to about 55 or 60 feet. Each year the Yukon is becoming more of a living reef like its neighbor the Ruby E. Though not particularly deep dives, they can be tricky. Its best to go with qualified guides and to dive conservatively. Water clarity is typical for coastal waters, usually ranging from 10-40 feet. The wrecks are a 20-minute boat ride from Mission Bay in San Diego. |
